A Practical Review of the Thrilling Handwritten Font

The blank board stared back at me—the usual starting point for any brand refresh. This time, it was for a small, urban bakery looking to shift from generic cozy to distinctly modern-artisan. Their existing logo felt dated, and the mood board leaned toward clean, tactile, and subtly expressive. I knew a handwritten font could bridge that gap, but finding one that feels genuine without being messy, or modern without being cold, is a hunt. That’s where Thrilling entered the picture.

First Impressions: Where Thrilling Finds Its Voice

Opening the font file, the immediate takeaway was balance. Thrilling isn’t the frantic, energetic scrawl of a marker pen, nor is it the overly uniform, digital-looking script that lacks personality. It sits comfortably in a contemporary middle ground. The letterforms have a natural, flowing rhythm with a consistent baseline, which makes it feel approachable yet professional. The strokes show a pleasing variation in weight, with subtle thick-and-thin transitions that give it a human touch without sacrificing clarity. Its overall personality is warm, confident, and creative—perfect for brands that want to feel personal but polished.

On that bakery logo draft, the word “Granary” in Thrilling immediately changed the mood. It injected the needed handmade sensibility, but the clean, open letters kept it from feeling rustic or cluttered. Compared to other script fonts I tested, Thrilling stood out for its readability at logo sizes; the characters don’t collapse into a decorative blob. It held its shape beautifully on a business card mockup and, crucially, on a small-scale packaging label for a coffee bag mockup.

Thrilling in the Real World: From Logos to Social Posts

Testing a font across multiple touchpoints is the only way to judge its versatility. Here’s how Thrilling performed in my simulated brand project.

For the logo itself, Thrilling worked excellently as a primary wordmark. The connected script flow created a cohesive unit, and the distinct letterforms ensured the name was memorable. It’s a font that can carry a brand’s visual identity without needing excessive decoration.

Moving to the supporting brand board, Thrilling’s role expanded. It became the accent typeface for quotes on the bakery’s website hero section, for taglines on packaging, and for highlighting product names on menus. On a homepage mockup, a headline like “Freshly Ground Stories” in Thrilling added an immediate, inviting layer over a supporting clean sans-serif font for body text.

In print, the font proved surprisingly robust. On a poster promoting a seasonal workshop, the main title in Thrilling captured attention with its friendly authority. On a business card, even at smaller sizes, the business name remained perfectly legible. The real test was social media graphics. Placed on an Instagram post template announcing a new sourdough loaf, the font added a crafted, authentic feel that aligned perfectly with the food photography—it didn’t fight with the image but complemented it.

A Note on Readability and Best Uses

Thrilling is, without doubt, a display font. Its strength lies in short phrases, headlines, logos, and accent text. I would not recommend it for long body paragraphs, website articles, or formal documentation. The natural variation and connected strokes are meant for impact at larger sizes. In the bakery’s case, we used it solely for headlines, labels, and the logo, while a neutral sans-serif handled all descriptive text. This combination created a clear, effective visual hierarchy.

Projects that require very formal, corporate, or technical communication might not find Thrilling suitable. Its inherent warmth and creativity lend it more to lifestyle brands, creative studios, artisan products, boutique retail, and personal projects. If your brand voice is serious, institutional, or needs to convey stark efficiency, another typeface would be a better fit.

Pairing Thrilling with Other Typefaces

A handwritten font like Thrilling rarely works alone. It needs a structural partner. In my testing, pairing it with a geometric sans-serif (like a clean, airy font such as Montserrat or Poppins) worked wonders. The sans-serif provides the framework and readability, while Thrilling adds the personality splash. For a more classic, editorial feel, a simple serif font for body text can also work, grounding the script’s modernity with a touch of tradition.

The key is contrast. Thrilling has enough character to stand out, so its partner should be deliberately understated. Avoid pairing it with another overtly decorative or script font, as that will lead to visual competition and clutter.

Technical Considerations and Practical Advice

Since Thrilling is described as a modern handwritten font suitable for commercial projects, a few practical checks are essential before committing it to client work.

Firstly, always review the specific licensing terms provided with the font. Confirm it covers your intended use—client branding, product packaging, merchandise like t-shirts and mugs, web embedding, and any print-on-demand applications. This avoids future legal complications.

Secondly, test the font files in your actual software. See how it renders in your design program, on web mockups using webfont formats if available, and in print proofs. Check for any special features like alternates or ligatures that could add flair to your logo. In my test, the standard character set was comprehensive and worked seamlessly across Adobe software and basic web font simulators.

Finally, the best advice is to mock up relentlessly. Don’t just see the font in a font list; place it on a shop sign mockup, a product label, a mobile screen, and a printed card. Observe how it feels in context. Does it still feel “Thrilling” when surrounded by the other elements of your brand? For the bakery project, it did. It provided that crucial thread of handmade authenticity across every touchpoint, from the digital screen to the physical packaging, without ever becoming a distraction. That’s the mark of a versatile, well-crafted script font.

For designers, entrepreneurs, and creators looking for a handwritten typeface that brings warmth without whimsy, and professionalism without stiffness, Thrilling offers a compelling option. It’s a font that understands its role in modern branding—to be a memorable, expressive voice that knows when to speak up and when to let the rest of the design do the talking.
