Bringing Personality to Digital Layouts with the Ourselves Font

I was staring at a hero section for a boutique ceramics website. The client wanted warmth, artistry, a sense of handmade care, but the bold sans-serif headline I’d initially chosen felt too cold and corporate. The layout was clean, the images beautiful, but the typography wasn’t connecting. I needed a font that whispered rather than shouted. That’s when I imported Ourselves.

A Font that Communicates Before the User Reads

Ourselves is a script typeface, but it occupies a specific and very useful middle ground. It’s not the overly casual, wildly variable handwritten script that can struggle with legibility on small screens. Nor is it the rigid, formal calligraphy that feels traditional. Its stroke is fluid and graceful, with a consistent baseline that gives it a structured elegance. The personality is contemporary, friendly, and subtly artistic. When I dropped it into that hero section, replacing the “Welcome to The Kiln” headline, the entire page’s mood shifted. It immediately felt more personal, like a greeting from the artist herself, building brand trust from the first glance.

The Practical Test: Readability and Hierarchy in a Real Layout

My first concern with any decorative font is always practical: how does it read? Especially in digital environments where users scan quickly. For the ceramics site, I tested Ourselves at various breakpoints. On desktop, the headline was perfectly clear and became the undeniable focal point. On mobile, I paid close attention to letter spacing and size. At a sufficient font-size—nothing tiny—it remained legible. This is key: Ourselves works best as a display font for prominent, short pieces of text. It’s not for body copy, paragraphs, or dense instructional text. Its role is in the visual hierarchy, creating an entry point.

I used it for the primary hero headline and then for key section titles, like “Our Process” and “Latest Collection.” This created a consistent typographic voice across the page. For the body text and UI elements like buttons and navigation, I paired it with a simple, geometric sans-serif. This pairing is crucial. The sans-serif handles all the heavy lifting of readability and interface functionality, while Ourselves provides the decorative accent, the brand personality. It’s a classic and effective web design strategy: one font for emotion, one font for clarity.

Where Ourselves Shines on a Website

Through this project and others, I’ve found its ideal digital applications:

Technical Considerations for Web Use

Before committing to a font like Ourselves for any client project or online store, you must check the technical specs. Is it available as a webfont? What file formats are included? For web design, you need the font in formats like WOFF or WOFF2 for fast, reliable loading across browsers. Does it have multiple weights or alternates? While Ourselves has a cohesive single weight, its style is perfect for the uses I described. Also, confirm the commercial font licensing. For use on a live website, digital templates, or in client brand assets, you need a license that covers that specific usage. This is non-negotiable for professional work.

Readability Advice for Digital Contexts

To ensure Ourselves performs well:

Building a Polished Online Brand Experience

The final ceramics site launched with Ourselves defining its typographic voice. The result wasn’t just a “pretty” font choice; it was a strategic one. The font communicated the brand’s handmade, personal ethos before the user read a single paragraph. It created a visual hierarchy that felt intentional and polished. It made the site feel less like a generic template and more like a bespoke digital storefront. For a SaaS founder, blogger, or entrepreneur, this is the goal: using design assets, like a premium script font, to build a consistent, engaging brand identity from the homepage to the checkout page.

Ourselves, as a font in the Script Amp category, is a tool for that. It’s not a font for every brand—a stark, tech-focused SaaS might need something different. But for creative businesses, lifestyle brands, artists, coaches, and anyone wanting to infuse their digital presence with a touch of modern, friendly artistry, it’s a compelling option. It reminds us that in web design, typography is functional, but it’s also deeply emotional. The right typeface tells your story, and Ourselves tells a story of care, creativity, and style.
